US WESTERN EXPRESS: Adams & Co.´s Express, Yankee Jim´s, double oval handstamp on embossed ladies inbound cover originating with blue "Lawrence, Mass./Jan 29" postmark and handstamped ´10" rate, addressed to Yankee Jim´s where it was picked up and forwarded by Adams to Placerville with their "COD $1.00" express charge, very fine; ex-Rohloff. Adams Express was organized by Alvin Adams, Wm. B. Dinsmore and D.H. Haskell in 1849 to operate in California. Besides mail and express they also conducted a banking business, becoming the largest shippers of gold in the west during their time.
