The first international congress of americanists was born in the city of Nancy in France, in August 25 of 1875, "a few years after the invention of the term Latin America". Its call had like immediate goal: "to contribute to the progress of ethnographic, archaeologic, linguistic and historical studies relative to the Américas, specially in the times previous to Cristóbal Columbus.
During the ten first versions of the International Congress of Americanists, the seat was in Europe and in the eagerness to alternate it between the old and new world, it was in Mexico, in 1895 the first celebration in America. From Its beginnings the official language was the French, soon were incorporate, the Spanish, English and Portuguese.
